What is covered

An area with few reports is not an area with few wells. It may simply have been drilled earlier.

This covers well reports filed from 2001 onward, which is when Texas began collecting them electronically. Wells drilled before then are on the TCEQ's older system and are not here. An area with few reports is not an area with few wells — it may simply be an area drilled earlier.

What is in the file

708,722 reports, submitted between 2001 and 2026, across 254 Texas counties and 4,187 cells of the state well grid. 121,886 of those wells have since been plugged, and their plugging report number is on the record.

⚠️ 434 reports (0.1%) carry a drilling year earlier than 2001. Most are late filings for older wells, and a handful are plainly typing errors — one reads 1901. We show the year as filed and do not correct it, but we do not derive the site’s coverage from it: the coverage is what the state says, and the state says these reports begin in February 2001.

Which of them get a page

A page exists where there is enough on file to say something useful:

Everything else is still in the search box: every one of the 708,722 reports can be opened by its tracking number.

⚠️ And what we changed about the file

One thing, and it is the reason the firm pages exist at all. The state stores the firm name as each form was typed: 9,323 distinct spellings. Reconciled, they are 4,784 firms. One firm alone had been filed under 43 spellings.
